Tom’s Thumb, a popular Scottsdale hike located near Troon Village, is by far one of my favorite Scottsdale hikes. Since the recent opening of the Tom’s Thumb Trailhead, this trail has gotten some decent traffic, due to its moderate difficulty and incredible views. The hike is a simple out and back, stretching to about 4.2 miles round trip with a 1,000 foot elevation gain. Most of the hike is a steady incline, with a short climbing trail to reach the Thumb. Seasoned hikers will have very little trouble with the grade or the climb.
The hike to Tom’s Thumb was originally one of the most challenging to be found in Scottsdale, reaching nearly twelve miles total. The more recent trailhead, located at 128th Street and Ranch Gate Road, has tempered the difficulty significantly. Expect to see a good amount of hikers on your way up, as this hike is quite popular, and bring enough water to last you at least two hours. If you want to touch the Thumb, remember: the last section is off the main trail and involves a bit of climbing, but the resulting views are worth the final stretch.
There are tons of great Scottsdale hikes located in Troon and plenty of recreation for the nature enthusiast. Contact me to view any homes for sale in Scottsdale.
