The Scottsdale Planning Commission recently approved tentative plans for Residences at the Borgata, a $50 million condominium development to replace the 32-year-old shopping center. The site was purchased by AV Homes with plans to build new Scottsdale condos designed for active adults aged 55 and older.
The Borgata, located just adjacent to Paradise Valley, is somewhat of a retail landmark. It is well-known for its distinct architecture which mirrors that of a Tuscan village. AV Homes has received some opposition to the new project from Scottsdale residents wanting to preserve the Borgata. The retail center is considered somewhat of a landmark and features striking architecture that many area residents have come to cherish. However, the consensus is that a larger number of residents will ultimately benefit businesses in the area, and a number of stores at the Borgata have already closed up shop or relocated.
Despite the opposition to converting the Borgata into Scottsdale condos, AV Homes received unanimous approval on Wednesday, June 26th, for a total of 218 units in four-story buildings that may reach up to 48 feet. Plans utilize 4.77 of the 6.85 acres for condominiums with some space remaining for commercial use.
