Big news for Scottsdale golfers and Phoenix Open fans! The Stadium Course at TPC Scottsdale is set for a major makeover this year. If plans are approved for the renovation, we may see some big changes to the world-famous golf course in time for the 2015 Waste Management Phoenix Open.
Tom Weiskopf, one of the original course designers, plans to relocate three of the greens and make small contour changes to the rest. The bunkers will be reshaped as well, the irrigation system upgraded, cart paths redone and the desert landscape repositioned. The clubhouse will also receive a few renovations, including additional lockers, a new indoor dining area and a redesign of the TPC Grille.
As for the individual holes of the TPC Scottsdale Stadium course, fan favorites 15, 16 and 17 will remain more or less unchanged. However, changes will be made to the 18th, which will alter the strategy of the hole somewhat. Weiskopf has made plans to move the rough inward, narrowing the fairway. The length will stay the same, and the lake that sits in front of the tee won’t be moved.
Final approvals are to be made early this month, with renovations beginning as early as April if everything goes through. The intended changes total to around $15 million. This major investment will be beneficial to the area for years to come, especially when considering the spectatorship that the Waste Management Phoenix Open brings to TPC Scottsdale each year.
