Seven-time major champion Arnold Palmer may be known as the man who brought golf to the masses, being one of the first to commercialize the sport during its television era. However, many of us know him by the drink of the same name. The “Arnold Palmer” is a simple concoction of iced tea and lemonade that the man himself originated at a restaurant in Palm Springs, CA back in the 1960s. After watching him pour lemonade onto his iced tea, a woman at another table promptly ordered a “Palmer.” Since then, the namesake has been popularized by Arizona Beverage Co.
Just last year, the “Arnold Palmer” did almost $200 million in sales in the U.S. Arnold Palmer himself made $36 million dollars, more than any golfer excluding Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson, despite his last tournament win being nearly 25 years ago. Arizona has stated that the majority of the brand’s customers are young people, some of which know very little about the legendary golfer behind the drink.
